For a well-balance, three-row SUV, the 2017 Ford Explorer is the clear choice. With seating for up to seven and generous cargo volume behind the third row, it's a great option for families and anyone else on the go. Potent powertrain options, advanced onboard technologies and some surprising luxuries make it a perfect fit for discerning modern car shoppers. Add to that package a solid array of safety features and unrivaled sound insulation, helping the Explorer to surpass the competition.

Shoppers get five different trim selections for the 2017 Ford Explorer: base, XLT, Limited, Sport and Platinum. Each one is loaded with a different combination of standard features, plus can be optioned up with extra equipment and packages.

Three engines are offered for the SUV. The base 3.5-liter V-6 has been designed with twin independent variable camshaft timing for sportier performance and efficiency. Peak output is rated at 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, but an intelligent four-wheel-drive system can be added for better handling.

A 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine is next. Even with a smaller displacement, it's able to achieve a peak 280 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive is the only option with this engine.

Finally, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine is standard for the 2017 Ford Explorer Sport and Platinum. With the assistance of turbocharging and direct injection, it can whip out a thunderous 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. Four-wheel drive is standard. All three engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Drivers are further treated to technologies which are designed to boost handling and maneuverability. Electronic power assist steering is standard, along with hill start assist. Hill descent control, on the other hand, is only standard on the Sport and Platinum trims. The independent front and rear suspension makes for a comfortable ride on the road. Models with four-wheel drive also come with a terrain management system, with the ability to change settings while on the move for incredible flexibility.

A comprehensive system of safety designs and technologies come standard on the 2017 Ford Explorer, while even more advanced systems can be added. The airbag system provides coverage for people on all three rows of seats, and optional rear inflatable seatbelts further decrease the likelihood of injury. Drivers can also benefit from the extra visibility provided by the optional front 180-degree camera, which is an especially handy feature when pulling around a blind corner. There's even a washer as part of the setup, making it easy to remove dirt and other debris to keep the view clear.

Many of the usual comforts are standard or available for the interior, including leather upholstery, seat heaters/ventilation, wood trim and many more. To keep up with the ever-mobile world, the second row can be outfitted with dual smart-charging USB ports. Sync3, which comes with better voice controls, clearer menus and other improvements, is also available.
